In 1992, Rich was the head coach of the Steinert High School baseball team, which won the New Jersey Group II Baseball Championship. In 1967, he was the sophomore leadoff hitter and center fielder on the Rider baseball team that one a school-record 31 games, 11 more than the existing record, and advanced to the College World Series, where the Broncs finished fifth in the nation. As a junior on the Rider soccer team, he scored a school record 16 goals. A 1970 graduate of Rider, Giallella was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the ninth round of the 1969 draft and was named the Carolina League Most Valuable Player in 1970.
