A former sports editor of the Rider News student newspaper, Yavener was honored by the ECAC Sports Information Directors with the Media Award in 1992 for outstanding coverage of intercollegiate athletics in the Eastern United States . Celebrating his 50th year in the business, Yavener was presented the Rider University Distinguished Alumni Award.
