Men's Swimming & Diving Sets Two More Records at MAAC Championships

Justin Carey set both records on Friday evening

BUFFALO, NY – The Rider University men's swimming and diving team set two more records on the third day of the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships on Friday evening. The four-day event takes place February 14-17 at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center at Erie Community College.

After the third day of action, the Broncs remain in first-place overall with 486 points, while Marist is in second-place with 402 total points.

Sophomore Justin Carey (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) had a strong day in the pool, bringing home a pair of gold medals and a silver medal as well. Carey broke two MAAC records on Friday, the first of which came in the 100 fly with his first-place time of 47.45 and the second was in the 100 back with his gold-medal time of 47.40.    

Carey was also part of the 400 medley relay that came in second-place with a time of 3:16.62. Swimming alongside Carey were senior Zack Molloy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River HS North), junior Lucas Musselman (Timonium, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and junior Carter Paules (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus).

Molloy brought home yet another gold medal on the evening, winning the 200 free with a time of 1:35.33. Finishing behind Molloy in the event was junior Vincent Gibbons (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) in third at 1:39.41.

Musselman also won an individual event on Friday, finishing first in the 400 individual medley with a time of 3:54.21.

NOTES
- Freshman Daniel Bonge finished third in the 100 fly at 49.26.
- Sophomore Cole May came in sixth with a time of 50.10.
- Sophomore Rich Fortels landed in eighth in the 100 fly with a time of 50.65.
- Junior Griffin Hutton came in sixth in the 400 IM at 4:02.73.
- Carter Paules also finished seventh in the 100 breast with a time of 56.52.
- Fortels also earned a fourth-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 50.31 in the finals.

UP NEXT
The Broncs return to the pool tomorrow, February 17 with preliminary heats in the morning and the finals for 13 events in the evening starting at 6:00 pm. The conference will also hand out the major awards following the competition.
