Winthrop University 5, Rider University 2
ROCK HILL, SC-The Broncs out-hit the Eagles 7-4 but lost at Winthrop Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three-game series. "That seems to be a common theme," said Rider head coach Barry Davis.
Winthrop (5-15) scored a run in the seventh inning without a hit, on a hit batsman, two walks and a wild pitch to take a 5-2 lead.
Winthrop scored two runs in the fifth inning on a walk and a home run to take a 4-2 lead.
Winthrop tied the score at 2-2 with a solo home run with two outs in the third inning.
Freshman Greg Fazio (Far Hills/Ridge) doubled in the second inning and scored on a single by sophomore Ken Kremer (Hershey, PA/Hershey). Kremer then scored on an RBI single by sophomore Nick Crescenzo (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) to give Rider (5-11) a 2-1 lead.
"We were in the game today," Davis said. "For most of these games we've been in them, we've just been making mistakes."
Winthrop also scored a run in the first inning without a hit, on a walk, stolen base, a ground out and a wild pitch.
Rider junior Richie Garcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Valley Stream North) singled in the second inning and again in the fifth for two of Rider's seven hits.
Senior Brandon Cotten (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Valley) doubled in the fifth inning and junior Ian Lindsay (Oaklyn/Haddon Twp.) singled in the sixth inning.
Rider senior starter Patrick Devlin (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock North) pitched five innings and allowed four runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four. "I thought Devlin pitched pretty well," Davis said. "He battled."
Rider will take on Winthrop again Sunday afternoon at 1pm. "Certainly tomorrow it would be nice to go out and get a win," Davis said.
