Binghamton University 1, Rider University 0
VESTAL, NY-The Rider University men's soccer team lost to host Binghamton Sunday at the Binghamton Classic. "We played really well today," said Rider head coach Charlie Inverso. "From start to finish it was the best stretch we've played all year. I cannot say one negative thing about our effort today."
Binghamton (3-3) scored with less than three minutes left in regulation off of a corner kick to decide the game.
When people think of soccer powers in the East, Binghamton might not be one of the first teams that come to mind, but the host Bearcats led Ohio State 1-0 with four minutes left to play and led at West Virginia this season.
"This was a really good team we played today," Inverso confirmed, "and I think except for the final score we out-played them today. Especially in the second half when the ball was in our attacking end almost the entire half."
Rider out-shot Binghamton 8-6 in the second half but Binghamton held an 11-10 advantage in shots for the game, including 7-3 in shots on goal.
"We played both halves today, something we did not do on Friday," Inverso said, after the Broncs built a 1-0 lead against Albany before falling 3-1. "I think we were actually better in the second half today."
Rider junior goalkeeper Jason Giordano (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) made six saves. "Gio has been playing well in practice so we played him this weekend and he had a good game today," Inverso said.
For Rider (1-5-1) junior Brenden Noesges (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) and Giordano were named to the All-Tournament team. "That's a credit to them and a nice honor,"' Inverso said.
Rider travels to Saint Francis-NY September 24 for a 7pm game. "They are a good team and that's a tough place to play," Inverso said. "It seems like we are on the road a lot so we should be used to it. Road wins are better than home wins because they are harder to get."
