PHILADELPHIA, Pa.?Both the Rider University men's and women's swimming & diving teams were swept by Penn and Navy in a tri-meet on Saturday at Sheerr pool in Philadelphia on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. "This was an extremely competitive meet," said head coach Steve Fletcher. "Our men's team is battling injury and illness and the goal to get healthy by MAAC Championships in a couple of weeks."
For the Rider men, sophomore Drew Modrov (Smithtown, N.Y/Hauppauge) won the 50 free (20.95) and 100 free (46.08) with senior Josh Rosenbluth (Lawrenceville/Lawrence) winning the 200 back (1:53.62) and finishing second in the 100 back (52.17) and 200 IM (1:57.43). Freshman Brendan Cavallaro (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) placed third overall in the three-meter dive (275.95), finishing ahead of all of the Penn divers and two of the four Navy divers. Drew Modrov's double-win came against a Navy squad that entered the meet with the number one ranking among Mid-Major Division I teams by collegeswimming.com.
For the Rider women, senior Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) won the 100 fly (57.04), 200 IM (2:06.18) and 200 fly (2:03.18) with junior diver Amanda Burke (Churchville, Pa./William Tennent) winning both the one-meter (280.35) and three-meter (308.75) boards. Junior Kellyanne Tomasula (Sussex/Vernon Township) won the 100 back (58.05) and placed second in the 200 back (2:05.62).
"We're proud of Drew and Priscilla as well as Josh and Amanda for stepping up in a competitive environment with wins in their events and Brendan had a solid meet as well on the boards," Fletcher added. "We are equally proud of the team for representing the foundation of RUSDT."
The men's 400 free relay of junior Brian Brady (Turnersville/Gloucester Catholic), sophomore C.J. Kohner (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy), sophomore Ryan Nelthropp (Christiansted, V.I./St. Croix Country Day) and Modrov placed second with a time of 3:15.75.
The Broncs host Lafayette in the final dual of the regular season Wednesday night at Coppola Pool in the Maurer Center on the Rider University campus.
The meet will start at 6:00pm and will be a ?Code Cranberry' event, a unified showing of support to the swimming and diving teams from Rider's 300 other varsity student-athletes.
