CLEVELAND, OH - For the second time this season, Elijah Griffin has been named the MAC East Division Wrestler of the Week after a dominant runner-up finish at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational. With Griffin's recognition, the Broncs have now claimed a MAC Wrestler of the Week honor in four of the five weeks so far this season.
The award comes after Griffin put together a historic 4-1 performance at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational, becoming Rider's first-ever finalist and highest overall placer at the event.
At 141 pounds, Griffin punched his ticket to the finals with an 8-2 win over No. 28 Nash Singleton, setting the tone early with constant pressure, a second-period takedown, and a strong ride to close it out.
The Tulsa, OK native outscored his opponents 46-11 on his way to the championship bout.
In the title match against No. 6 Anthony Echemendia (Iowa State), Griffin took a 1-0 lead early in the second period and continued to battle through every position before ultimately falling 6-2 to finish as the tournament runner-up after entering as the No. 6 seed. Competing in one of the nation's toughest tournaments, Griffin delivered one of the strongest national showings in program history.
Following the historic weekend, Griffin climbed in the FloWrestling rankings to No. 15.
The Broncs return to action on Dec. 14 when they host No. 20 Oklahoma inside Alumni Gym.
Match is set for 1 p.m.
