Drexel University 21, Rider University 14
PHILADLEPHIA, PA— The Broncs lost at Drexel Saturday night. “Drexel did what they needed to do to win the match,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “That's the bottom line. They out-wrestled us, they won.”
For Rider (9-9) junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) won a major decision and improved to 22-8 overall, 14-4 in duals.
Senior Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional), the Rider Athlete of the Month for January when he went 9-1, defeated a 2015 NCAA qualifier to give Rider a 10-9 lead. “I would expect Rob to beat a good wrestler like he did tonight,” Taylor said. “It was an important win.”
Sophomore Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) won a major decision to cut the Drexel lead to 15-14. “Chad took the kid down right before the buzzer went off to get us some extra points,” Taylor said. “He again wrestled his heart out.”
Senior Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea) won at 174, his first time at that weight this year. Delia was 4-3 in two lighter weights this season.
In the 10th and deciding match nationally ranked senior Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) was wining before being pinned. “Conor had the match won but with 15 seconds left the kid had one chance in the match and he took it and was successful,” Taylor said. “Give him credit. He caught a cement job.”
Rider beat Drexel 20-17 last year. The last time Rider visited Drexel (2014) the Dragons won 20-19, the first time Drexel beat Rider since the 2007 season.
Rider and Drexel are former East Coast Conference, East Coast Wrestling Association and Colonial Athletic Association rivals. The two teams have now met 43 times since the series began in 1970-71, with Rider winning 33.
The Broncs return home to host Hofstra on Thursday at 6pm. That will be the last home match and prior to the match Rider's graduating seniors will be honored.
