Rider Wins EWL Dual on the Road

College Wrestling

Rider University 21, Cleveland State University 12

EDINBORO, PA—The Broncs won six of the 10 bouts to defeat Cleveland State in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet Sunday. "Always good to get a conference win," said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.

For Rider (6-8, 2-2 EWL) sophomore Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) won by fall to give Rider a 9-3 lead. “Chad is wrestling extremely well,” Taylor said.

Walsh is ranked 15th in the nation and improved to 17-5 on the season, 4-0 in EWL duals. “Chad beat a tough kid today so he had a big weekend,” Taylor said, “defeating two very good wrestlers.”

Sophomore B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), senior Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea), freshman Michale Fagg-Daves  (Somerset, NJ/Franklin), junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) and senior Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) also won.

“Deutsch did a nice job,” Taylor said.  “He has looked very good since coming back from his injury. B.J. is fighting through his comeback and found a way to win today in a tough match. That's a good corner to turn.”

Delia won for the fourth time this year and the 55th of his career. “Curt stepped up,” Taylor said. Delia was replacing the injured senior Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) who is ranked eighth in the nation.  “He did a nice job.”

For Cleveland State (6-5, 2-2 EWL) #15 Rikey Shaw won at heavyweight, Mike Carlone won at 141, John Martin won at 125 and Gabe Stark won at 174.

Rider lost to Cleveland State the last two years, the only other times these two teams have met.

Rider hosts Bloomsburg Friday at 7pm. “We've been on the road a lot, to Midlands, to Virginia Duals, out here, it will be good to be home,” Taylor said. “With the students back it will be good to be in our home gym.”
