LAWRENCEVILLE—Both the Rider University men's and women's indoor track and field teams swept The College of New Jersey in a dual meet Friday evening at Lawrenceville Prep.
The Rider men won 13 events enroute to a 104-63 victory and the Bronc women were victorious in 12 events, winning the team competition 97-68.
For the Rider women, freshman Lexie Fraction, (Sewell/Washington Twp.) won the 55 meter hurdles in a Rider record time of 8.10, also qualifying for ECACs with freshman Cleopatra Morrison (Long Branch) winning the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.25.
“Lexie has had a tremendous freshman season,” said head coach Bob Hamer. “She has been so consistent. She shows up every day ready to work and she has a great attitude. She is the ultimate competitor.”
For the Bronc men, sophomore Lamont Higgins (New Brunswick/St. Joseph) won both the 55 meter (6.52) and 400 meter (50.21) and sophomore Kyle Bryant (Cherry Hill/Cherry Hill HS East) won long jump (6.70 meters) and triple jump (14.02 meters).
“Lamont had a great day,” Hamer said. “And Kyle (Bryant) was great as well, picking up two victories. He missed the fall and having him getting back and competing strong is great to see.”
Also for the Bronc men, senior Andrew Pozo (Forked River, NJ Toms River HS South) qualified for the IC4As in the weight throw with a winning distance of 56'10.75” and sophomore Wilfred Asamoah (Edison) won the 55 meter hurdles with an IC4A qualifying time of 7.53 with sophomore Devon Jefferson (Franklin Park/Franklin) and freshman Christian Patrick also making IC4As with a time of 7.59 and 7.63 respectively.
“The throws group had a nice meet and stepped up,” Hamer said. “They are getting better and better each week.”
Also for the Rider women, freshman Karoline Sandvig (West Windsor/West Windsor Plainsboro South) won the weight throw with a distance of 15.49 meters, junior Stephanie Welte, (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Basil's Academy) won the mile with a new PR of 5:18.75, senior Emily Ritter, (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Tech), won the 800 meter with a new PR of 2:14.80 and freshman Stephanie Lombardo (Buffalo, N.Y./Cheektowaga) won the shot put with a distance of 13.47 meters.
Junior Nicole Georgia (Lincoln Park/Boonton) won the long jump and set a new PR with a distance of 5.30m, junior Miranda Roberts (Sewell/Washington Twp.) won pole vault with a mark of 3.20 meters and junior Nicolette Mateescu (Kendall Park/South Brunswick), won the 3000 meter with a time of 10:26.10.
Other men's results included senior Derek Lake, (Middletown, NY, Pine Bush) winning the mile with a time of 4:26.76, sophomore Erik Adamcik (Hampton/North Hunterdon) winning the pole vault with a distance of 4.65 meters and freshman Christin Patrick (East Orange/Seton Hall Prep.) tied for first in high jump with a distance of 1.95 meters.
“All Erik seems to do is win the pole vault every time he competes,” Hamer said. “He takes advantage of his opportunities every time he competes.”
The teams compete again at Monmouth on February 14.
“Tonight was more of a team scoring meet as opposed to running for a certain time,” Hamer said. “The goal, as it will be in the conference championships in two weeks is to run quality times but also at the end of the day, defeat your competition and gain points for the team. Tonight really taught us how to win and how to compete hard. The times and distances don't matter too much if you don't beat anyone. So wins are really the primary focus. That mental preparation and confidence is just as important as the physical preparation. It was also a nice local meet for family and friends to get to see us compete.”
