Rider at Virginia Duals
Bucknell 25, Rider 12
HAMPTON, VA—The Rider Broncs lost to Bucknell Saturday to finish 1-3 at the 35th Virginia Duals, held at the Hampton Coliseum.
“The wheels came off the bus the last two days,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor, who saw his Broncs get pinned or lose several matches that they were winning in the third period during the two-day competition. “Again today we had a wrestler get pinned while he was winning.”
Coming into the Duals ranked 10th in the nation, the Broncs were competing without two of their starters due to injuries. “It is not that the replacements didn't try hard, but we just couldn't make up the difference,” Taylor said.
The two weight classes that Rider had injuries in were a combined 1-7.
Last year Rider won three of five duals at this tournament and placed sixth.
Rider freshman Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) won 10-4 on Saturday to go 4-0 at the Va Duals. “Chad had a real good weekend,” Taylor said. “He was the highlight of the tournament.”
Also winning on Saturday were junior Rob Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional), freshman B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) and sophomore Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy).
Deutsch went 3-1 in the Duals, Clagon was 2-2 and Wolfe was 2-2.
Rider (7-4, 1-0 EWL) will now have some time off to regroup before hosting Eastern Wrestling League opponent Edinboro Saturday, January 24. “We need no time off,” Taylor said, “We need time on. We'll be doing a lot of hard work to get ready for Edinboro and to finish out the year strong.”
