Rider at ECAC Fall Championship
MIDDLEFIELD, Conn.—The Rider University golf team competed at the two-day 2014 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Fall Golf Championship September 29-30.
The competition was held at the par 72, 6,785 yard Lyman Orchards-Robert Trent Jones Course.
Rider finished in fifth place out of six teams with a 36-hole total of 622 (312-310).
“The team showed improvement this week but just couldn't put it all together,” said head coach Jason Barry. “We struggled down the stretch today with bigger numbers.”
Individually for the Broncs, senior Cole Clark (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) and sophomore Aaron Simone (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) each shot 150 with Clark scoring rounds of 72-78 and Simone 77-73 to tie for 12th out of 30 golfers.
“Aaron played a nice round today,” Barry said about the round of 73. “He works hard at his game and it was good to see him put a nice 18 holes together.”
“Cole struggled on the back nine a bit today,” Barry said. “Overall he had a good tournament and he is extremely talented. He gave himself a chance to win the tournament which is always our goal.”
Clark was in fourth place after the opening round on Monday.
Senior Luke Liddell (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) had a second round of 79 after opening with an 82 to finish with a two-day total of 161, good for 23rd in the tournament.
Sophomore Sam DiGaetano (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) shot 162, with rounds of 82 and 80 to place 24th.
Junior Joe Hughes (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) had a two-round total of 163 after rounds of 81 and 82 to finish 25th.
Rick Dowling from Fairfield set a course record with a 64 and was the individual medalist with a score of 139 after winning a one-hole sudden death playoff on hole number 10 with a birdie.
The University of Rhode Island won the team title with a score of 577, followed by Fairfield University (582).
Iona College was third (596), followed by Saint Peter's (599), Rider and St. Francis-Brooklyn (722).
Led by a runner-up finish from then senior James Buttermark, Rider placed third at this event in 2013 when it was held in Egg Harbor, New Jersey.
Rider participates in the Binghamton Fall Invite on October 5-6.
