St. Thomas Aquinas 7, Rider University 2
SPARKILL, N.Y.—The Rider University men's tennis team kicked off its 2014 fall schedule on Sunday afternoon with a 7-2 loss at St. Thomas Aquinas.
For Rider (0-1), sophomore Matthew Begley (Pennington/Hopewell Valley Central) won 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles and teamed up with freshman Steven Murray (Burlington Township) for a 9-7 victory at third doubles.
The match was the first as head coach for Doug Potkay who took over for the retired Bronc Hall of famer Ed Torres.
“For the first match of the season, the team played well against a strong opponent,” Potkay said. “Each match was close and the team played with confidence.”
The Rider women host Siena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match September 27.
The Bronc men are back in action on September 28 for a non-conference match against Hofstra.
