WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Cole Thurgur (Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean) earned a three-set victory at No. 3 singles and
Matteus Froberg Dahlin (Lidingo, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) and
Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) won at No. 1 doubles, but the Rider University men's tennis team fell in its dual opener at Monmouth, 6-1, Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 0-1, while the Hawks are now 1-0.
Froberg Dahlin and Slattery defeated Louis Keller and Alex Martinez Sanz, 6-4, at top doubles. But the Hawks took the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2 and a 6-2 decision at No. 3.
In singles, the Hawks clinched the match, winning five of six flights. Thurgur battled to a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 12-10 victory over Sasha Vysochenko at No. 3.
Axel Engstrom also took his match to a third set, but fell in a marathon third-set tiebreaker to Luka Jimenez, 6-7, 6-2, 18-16, at No. 5.
The Broncs return to action Thursday, Oct. 16, when they begin play at ITA Northeast Regionals at Princeton.
