FAIRFAX, VA – Matteus Froberg Dahlin (Lidingo, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium),
Cole Thurgur (Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean) and
Axel Engstrom won twice each as the Rider University men's tennis team defeated George Mason, 4-3, Saturday to close out dual play this Fall. With the win, the Broncs improve to 1-1, while the Patriots fall to 0-1.
Froberg Dahlin and Thurgur battled to a 7-6 (7) victory over Ekansh Kumas and Monil Lotlikar at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point. Engstrom also paired with
Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) to defeat Zavan Fahim and Deniz Okyay, 6-4, at No. 3.
The Broncs took three singles wins to clinch the win, all by 7-6, 6-4, final scores. Froberg Dahlin also fought throughout a 7-6 (8), 6-4, victory at the top singles flight over Kumas, while Thurgur won by nearly the same score at No. 2, 7-6 (5), 6-4, over Lotlikar at No. 2. Engstrom also defeated Niza Simunyola, 7-6 (5), 6-4, at No. 4.
While the Broncs have wrapped up their team docket for the Fall, Froberg Dahlin will compete at the ITA Conference Masters Championships in San Diego, this coming Thursday through Sunday. Froberg Dahlin earned a berth in the tournament by virtue of winning the 2025 MAAC Masters singles championship in early October.
