Saint Joseph's University 1, Rider University 0
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Saint Joseph's Hawks broke a scoreless tie with 3:23 remaining in the game, sending the Rider University field hockey team to its second one-goal loss in a row as the Broncs fell 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia.
The Hawks scored on a pass in front of the cage that was tipped in at the 66:37 mark of the 70 minute contest.
“Saint Joseph's played tougher than us and found a way to come through when it counted,” said head coach Lori Hussong.
For Rider (2-4), junior goalie Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) made four saves as Saint Joseph's out-shot the Broncs 10-6.
“Joelle was outstanding in goal,” said Hussong.
Junior Rachel Ippolite (Woolwich Twp., N.J./Kingsway Regional), sophomore Carlie Spaeder (Newtown Square, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and sophomore Carlota Alsina (Barcelona, Spain/Institut Matadepera) each had two shots for Rider.
The Hawks held a 7-4 penalty corner advantage.
“Our effort was good but once again, the game was not the result that we wanted,” Hussong added.
The two teams last met on October 4, 2013 when Rider won 2-1 in overtime, also in Philadelphia. Saint Joseph's and Rider have met 17 times since the series began in 1981 with Rider having five wins in the series and three games ending in a tie.
Rider travels to Towson University on September 21 in head coach Lori Hussong's third attempt at career win number 200.
