LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University men's tennis team lost a non-conference match to Philadelphia University on Thursday afternoon.
For Rider (0-4), freshman Jeremy Van Herwarde (Sussex, N.J./Pope John XXIII) won his first collegiate match, scoring a 6-1, 6-4 victory at fifth singles.
“Jeremy played a smart match and moved the ball well,” said head coach Doug Potkay. “He put pressure on his opponent to make mistakes.”
Both sophomore Matthew Begley (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) and sophomore Adam Levi (Princeton Junction, N.J./Pennington School) took their matches to three sets before losing. Begley lost 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 at third singles and Levi fell 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 at fourth singles.
Freshman Chris Popso (Florence, N.J./Florence) and sophomore Chanton Phan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) teamed up for a 6-5 win at first doubles, winning the tiebreaker 7-5.
“Matt and Adam went to three sets with Adam losing a close tiebreaker,” Potkay said. “And the doubles match for Chris and Chanton was a come from behind effort.”
Both the Rider men's and women's tennis teams host Saint Peter's at noon on Sunday for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match. The match at Quinnipiac, scheduled for Saturday was postponed due to rain and will be rescheduled for October 21 at 2:30pm in Connecticut.
