Rider at George Washington Invitational - Day One

BETHANY BEACH, Del.--The Rider University golf team opened the 2012 spring schedule at the 54-hole George Washington Invitational on Friday and after 36 holes on day one, the Broncs are in 10th place.

The tournament is being played at the par 72, 6,834 yard Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club in Bethany Beach, Delaware.

"It was a pretty good first day for the first tournament of the year," said head coach Bob Whartenby.  "We played very solid except for a few holes here and there.  If we eliminate those bad holes, we can really shoot a low score"

For Rider, freshman Cole Clark (Califon/Voorhees) scored a 145 (71-74) and sits in fourth place out of 69 golfers, three shots out of the lead.  Clark had the fourth most birdies during the 36 holes with seven and as a team, Rider had 15 birdies on the day.

"What can I say about Cole; he played great!," Whartenby said.  "Shooting 71 and then 74 in a lot windier conditions, he played consistent.  That's a great effort from a freshman. Hopefully he can post something low tomorrow and take home a win for us."

Also for the Broncs, sophomore James Buttermark (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) is in 30th place after rounds of 76 and 77 (153).  Buttermark tied for the second lowest par three scoring average on day one at 2.88.

Freshman Luke Liddell (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) is 55th after scoring 162 (80-82), senior Chris Wolak (Issaquah, Wash./Hopkinton) is 62nd (169) after rounds of 84 and 85 and junior Chris Foster (Pittsgrove/Schalick) is 64th after a 171 (93-78).

Rider shot 311-311 for an opening day total of 622.

Max Marsico from the University of Pennsylvania leads the field with a two under par 142 after rounds of 72 and 70 on Friday.

Penn is in first place with a total of 579 (290-289), followed by Boston College 589 (295-294), University of Delaware 591 (295-296), George Washington 602 (301-301) and La Salle 607 (297-307).

Rider finished seventh out of nine teams at this tournament in 2011.

The final 18 holes are Saturday.
