STONY BROOK, NY?The Broncs (20-19) lost a non-conference doubleheader at Stony Brook Saturday. “We didn't do much to help ourselves today,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “In the first game we didn't do much offensively and in the second game we didn't do much on the mound.”
In the second game, a nine-inning contest, sophomore A.J. Albee (Ashley, Pa./Hanover Area) had a bunt single and eventually scored on a ground ball out by junior Eric Woodrow (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) to cut the lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning.
It was Albee's third hit of the doubleheader, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.
Senior Sean Olson (Vineland, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) doubled and scored on a single by sophomore Steve Galella (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) to cut the lead to 9-3 in the fifth inning.
Olson had three hits in the doubleheader and now has 210 in his career, fourth highest ever at Rider. Galella, sophomore John Ralston (Annandale, Va./Paul VI) and junior Matt McCollum (Tabernacle, N.J./Shawnee) each had two hits in the doubleheader.
The Seawolves (23-18) scored five runs in the third inning, all with two outs, on six hits, including a three-run home run, to take a 6-1 lead. Stony Brook scored three more runs in fourth inning on two hits, including a two-run home run, to take a 9-2 lead. Four runs in the seventh on two hits and two walks made it 13-3.
“They scored a lot of their runs with two outs today,” Davis said, “and we left a lot of men (10 in the second game) on base.”
Senior James Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) singled to lead off the third inning and eventually scored on a ground ball double play to tie the score at 1-1. Hayes now has 250 career hits, 13 shy of the Rider record. Hayes is already the Rider career record holder for runs scored and stolen bases, as well as saves.
Senior Mike Petrowski (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert) pitched four-plus innings, striking out five without a walk. Petrowski has now pitched 279.1 innings in his career, closing in on the Rider record of 282.1. Petrowski is already the Rider single-season record holder for innings pitched with 96.2 last year, breaking the old record of 96.1 that stood for 41 years. Petrowski now has a team-high 50 strike outs this year and 211 for his career. The Rider career record for K's is 262.
Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a bunt single, a ground ball out and an RBI single.
In the first game, a scheduled seven-inning contest, senior Maurice Williams (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) hit a solo home run in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-2. Williams had two of Rider's six hits in the first game.
Stony Brook broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with a walk, a single, a sacrifice fly and a home run to take a 4-1 lead.
Williams led off the fifth inning with a triple and scored on a single by Albee to tie the score at 1-1. Albee had two hits in the first game. “A.J. and Mo had very productive days at the plate,” Davis said. “We only had six hits in the first game and they had four of them.”
Senior Jimmer Kennedy (Levittown, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) pitched all six innings, striking out three. “I thought Jimmer pitched well enough to win the game,” Davis said.
The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a triple and a sacrifice fly. Stony Brook is 9-7 in the America East and now 13-5 at home.
These two teams will play another doubleheader Sunday at Rider, weather permitting, beginning at 1pm. “They were better than us today,” Davis said. “They pitched tougher, they got better swings at the plate than we did today. They deserved to win both games today. Hopefully we'll be able to bounce back tomorrow and get something going.”
