LAWRENCEVILLE?The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match to Manhattan Thursday afternoon. “We played well in the first sets,” said Rider head coach Ed Torres, “but as you can see by the scores we fell apart in the second sets.”

For Rider (2-11, 0-6 MAAC), freshman Tricia Ashmore (Sparta) won at third singles without losing a game. “Trish Ashmore is a good player,” Torres said. “A very good freshman player. I expect a lot of her next year and the years to come. She'll see some action at number one next year.”

Ashmore improved to 7-11 with the win Thursday. The seven wins is the most on the team. “She's been playing third singles all year because as a freshman I want her to get her feet wet,” Torres said. “She hits the ball as well as anyone on the team, but I didn't want to throw her into number one right away.”

The Broncs' first doubles team of senior Danielle Morse (Edison/Hopewell Valley) and junior Kristina Paich Stanhope/Lenape Valley Regional) won at first doubles.

“We lost because of errors today,” Torres said. “The other team was not making any great shots, we are just not as steady as we should be.”

The men's and women's teams play at St. Francis-NY Saturday. “We're going up to play in the National Tennis Center,” Torres said. “That is a nice play to play and it allows us to get ready for the MAAC Championships that are there in two weeks.”
