Rider's Schneider Honored by the NEC for the Fifth Time
LAWRENCEVILLE-For the fifth time in the last six weeks, freshman Marlaine Schneider (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) of the Rider University field hockey team has been named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week.
Schneider was honored for all games played October 19-25.
"Marlaine is the toughest competitor that I've seen in a long time," said head coach Lori Hussong. "Her hustle and desire to get the job done is second to none."
Schneider had the game-winning assist as Rider (15-1, 6-0 NEC) won 1-0 in overtime at Saint Francis (Pa.) October 25. That win clinched Rider's 10th straight NEC playoff berth.
Schneider stole the ball at the 25, ran it back up the field and passed it to Virginia Egusquiza (Getxo, Spain) who scored from the top of the circle, 9:49 into the overtime period.
Schneider also assisted on Rider's third goal in a 4-0 win at Robert Morris on October 23.
Schneider has points in nine of her last 11 games and leads all rookies in the conference with 18 points (six goals, six assists). Schneider was also recognized by the NEC on October 19, October 12, September 28 and September 21.
"It is great to see Marlaine continue to be recognized for her great play," Hussong added. "When the game is on the line, she has come through time and time again. She'll go through a wall for her teammates, not for her own glory but for everyone around her. Everything she does is for the team and that is what makes her special."
In the 10 seasons under Hussong, this is the 33rd time that Rider has had a conference Rookie of the Week honoree and seventh time this season. Freshmen Ellie LaBar (Oaklyn/Collingswood) (September 14) and Jackie Adams (Medford Lakes/Shawnee) (August 31) were honored earlier in the season.
Sophomore Megan Pisani (Plainsboro/West Windsor-Plainsboro North) was recognized as the NEC Player of the Week on October 5 and September 7.
Rider hosts Siena on October 30 and Lock Haven November 1 to finish out the regular season. Lock Haven (7-0 NEC) is the defending conference champion and the winner of Sunday's game will host the four-team playoffs on November 6-7.
