WEST LONG BRANCH? A neutral site non-conference game on the campus of Monmouth University, at “So Sweet A Cat” field wasn't so sweet for the Broncs as the Rider University field hockey team lost by two against Colgate Sunday afternoon.
“That was not the same team that has played the last two games,” [overtime against Hofstra and last second loss at Villanova] said head coach Lori Hussong. “Today's performance was sub-standard and not the right effort. We didn't play well as a team. It was like 11 individuals out there.”
Sophomore Allison Vogel (Oceanport/Shore Regional) scored her first goal of the season (and third of her career) with five minutes remaining off an assist from senior Mandy Hunter (Plainsboro/W. Windsor Plainsboro-North) for the Broncs only goal of the day.
Colgate (3-1) dominated play, out-shooting Rider (0-3) 18-13 with junior Lyndsie Johnson (Gibbsboro/Eastern) making eight saves, several from point blank range. “It was one of those games that you needed your goalie to come up with big saves and Lyndsie did for the most part,” Hussong said. “We just made too many mistakes off of corner plays and that created easy rebound opportunities for Colgate.”
The Red Raiders kept the pressure on the Rider defense all day with a 12-4 penalty corner advantage.
“The result of our effort was getting creamed three to one,” Hussong added. “There was absolutely no communication on the field and we didn't help each other out on defense which caused more penalty opportunities for Colgate. We just weren't on today.”
Colgate opened the scoring only 14 minutes into the game using a give and go on a corner, eventually scoring off a rebound, inside the left post.
Eight minutes into the second half, the Red Raiders broke out on a three on two, making three perfect passes before hitting the back of the cage to lead by two.
With eight minutes remaining in the game, Colgate again used the penalty corner to its advantage, scoring off a deflection in front of the cage to go up by three goals.
Vogel collected a loose ball from Hunter and put Rider on the board with five minutes remaining.
The Broncs lost to Colgate 3-0 in Durham, New Hampshire last season and the Red Raiders have won 12 of the 17 games in the series including three straight. The Broncs last defeated Colgate in the fourth game of the 2005 season by a 4-1 score.
Rider has lost three in a row to start the season and four straight dating back to last season.
The Broncs travel to West Chester, Pa. to face Appalachian State in a neutral site game on September 14 at noon.
“We're 0-3 and we've got to get it going,” Hussong said. “We've got to get the train going in the right direction or it will be very hard to get up for our Northeast conference games.”
Rider opens the 2008 home schedule with a 4:00pm contest against Radford on September 26 and the Broncs open conference play hosting Sacred Heart on October 10 at 4:00pm.
