Rider University at NJAIAW Tournament ? Day One
MADISON ? The Rider University women's tennis team competed on day one of the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) Tennis Tournament at Drew University in Madison, N.J. on Saturday.
“This is the first singles tournament we've ever played,” said head coach Ed Torres. “With it being an individual tournament, there is a completely different mindset You're not thinking of your team; you're thinking only of yourself.”
The first day of the double elimination tournament consisted of two rounds played in an 8 game super-set format. Any player with a loss in the first round was put into consolation championship play.
For the Broncs, senior Danielle Morse (Edison, N.J./Hopewell Valley), freshman Danielle White (Reading, Pa./Reading), freshman Patricia Ashmore (Sparta), and freshman Allison Clay (East Brunswick) all earned the right to compete in day two of the tournament for the consolation championship.
“All four of the girls were consistent and didn't make errors,” said Torres. “They didn't try the hard shots and kept the ball in play. All four made less errors than I've seen all year.”
Morse competed in flight “A,” which consists for first and second singles players and went 1-1 with an 8-1 victory over Kean University. White and Ashmore competed in flight “B,” the third and fourth singles flight, both going 1-1 and getting wins over Kean. Clay competed in flight “C,” consisting of fifth and sixth singles, and also went 1-1 with a win over Kean.
Of the eight players to compete on day one, six had a record of 1-1 with two winning in the first round.
Morse, White, Ashmore and Clay will all return on Sunday, October 12th for the final day of the tournament. It will be semifinals and finals matches which will be set in three set standard format.
