Bobcat Invitational
HAMDEN, Conn.?Despite 10 kills and seven digs from freshman Katelyn Thompson (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) and a match high 17 digs from sophomore Amy Jeary (Depew, N.Y./St. Mary's), the Broncs lost in straight sets to Quinnipiac on Friday night in the opening round of the Bobcat Invitational. “It was a close match looking at the scores,” said assistant coach Michelle Walsh. “But our mistakes made it that close. Tonight was a match that we know we should have won. It just came down to Quinnipiac making fewer mistakes than we did.”
The Bobcats defeated Rider (0-6) 30-27, 30-28, 30-28 to snap a 14 match losing streak dating back to October 15, 2006.
“Katelyn is a solid all around player,” Walsh added. “She is going to make rookie mistakes but it is important that she remains confident in her abilities because she is talented and because we have a young team, all of the players are going to have to setup sooner rather than later.”
Junior Lacey Johnson (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) added 11 digs and six kills with rookie Amanda Piccolini (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville) compiling 21 assists and seven digs for the Broncs.
“Mentally, we just didn't have it tonight,” Walsh added. “We were getting ahead and then let Quinnpiac back into the match. Then they would go ahead and we didn't have an answer. We are still working on finding who our ?go to' players are going to be and we are still working on trying different combinations.”
Rider stays in Connecticut for the final two matches of the tournament on Saturday, facing Providence and UMBC.
