LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Rider University men's golf senior Connor Bekefi (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and sophomore Ben Ortwein (Easton, PA/Notre Dame) both shot three-under 69 and the Broncs shot three-under 285 in Saturday's second round of the MAAC Championships at Disney's Palm Golf Course. Bekefi now stands tied for seventh place at two-under 142 for the tournament, while Ortwein is a stroke back at 143 (-1), good for a tie for ninth. As a team, the Broncs are tied for fourth at 579 (+3) for the tournament.
Louie Giovacchini (Windermere, FL/Windermere) shot one-over 73 Saturday, while Mike McCrone (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) shot 74 (+2) a day after shooting even-par 72 to sit tied for 13th individually after two rounds. Pelle Ahlqvist (Habo, Joenkoeping, Sweden/Sandagymnasiet) shot 75 (+3) for the second-straight round to round out the Broncs' line-up.
NOTES
- Siena leads the team scoring, shooting 285 for the second-straight round to move to six-under 570. Fairfield shot the low round of the day at 284 to move to four-under 572. Mount St. Mary's (578, +2) is in third, a stroke ahead of Rider and Iona (579, +3). Manhattan (587, +11), Canisius (597, +21), Niagara (604, +28) and Saint Peter's (618, +42) round out the field.
- Fairfield's Colin Summers and Siena's Mike McConie lead the individual leaderboard at 138 (-6). Summers shot the low round of the day at six-under 66.
- Rider has a tournament-best 35 birdies thus far, including 19 in the second round.
- Bekefi and Ortwein had five birdies apiece Saturday, while McCrone, Giovacchini and Ortwein had three each.
- The Broncs have posted the second-best score on the Par 5's (-13) and the third-best score on the Par 4's (+17) for the tournament.
- Bekefi's two-under performance on the Par 3's is tied for the low score for the tournament.
- Ortwein's 10 birdies for the tournament are tied for second-most.
