Bekefi, Ortwein Lead Broncs on Day 1 at Battle at Rum Pointe

Broncs shoot four-under 284, Bekefi one stroke back of individual lead

BERLIN, MD – Connor Bekefi (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) is tied for fourth at four-under 68 and Ben Ortwein (Easton, PA/Notre Dame) is two strokes back at 70 (-2), tied for eighth, as the Rider University men's golf team sits in second place with a first-round 284 (-4) after the first round at the Battle at Rum Pointe, hosted by Iona at Rum Pointe Seaside Links. The Broncs sit four strokes back of leader LIU (280, -8) and three strokes ahead of the Gaels (287, -1).

Zander Gibson (Concord, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) also contributed a first-round 71 (-1), while the Broncs also counted Louie Giovacchini's (Windermere, FL/Windermere) 75 (+3). Jack Urban (Upper St. Clair, PA/Upper St. Clair) also competed with a seven-over 79.

- Seven of nine MAAC schools are in competition at Rum Pointe this weekend, with only the league's Western New York faction of Canisius and Niagara not taking part. The Broncs (284, -4) finished Round 1 with the top score in the league, ahead of Iona (287, -1), Siena (289, +1), Mount St. Mary's (292, +4), Fairfield (293, +5), Saint Peter's (299, +11) and Manhattan (305, +17).
- Hartford's Michael Amari, Iona's Fletcher Wunderlich and Colgate's Robbie Herzig are tied atop the individual leaderboard with first-round 67's (-5), a stroke ahead of Bekefi.
