LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Babacar Diene (Thies, Senegal/CEM Ballabey) scored for the third-straight game as the Rider University men's soccer team played Marist to a 2-2 tie Saturday night on Ben Cohen Field. With the tie in the rematch of the 2021 MAAC Championship Game, which also ended in a 2-2 tie, Rider moves to 2-8-4 (1-3-3 MAAC), while the Red Foxes are now 6-6-2 (2-4-1 MAAC).
The game looked to have a promising beginning as the Broncs were awarded a penalty kick in the 17
th minute. But
Adel Al Masude's (Brussels, Belgium/GO Lyceum Gent) was saved by Marist goalkeeper Sam Ilin. Equipped with momentum from the save, Marist broke through first in the 28
th minute, with Liam Salmon's ball down the right sideline to Jacob Schulman setting up his cross to Jared Juleau for the score from the left post. Rider would equalize in the 43
rd minute, as
Guillaume Sarrabayrouse (Toulose, France/Pierre Paul Riquet) played the ball forward in the midfield to
Nick Cruz (Monroe Township, NJ/Saint Joseph [Rutgers]) who sent a thru ball into the box for Diene, who tapped the ball around a charging Ilin, before knocking it into the uncontested goal.
Marist would retake the lead in the 53
rd minute, this time on a Schulman penalty kick after a handball in the box. But Rider would get the tally back in the 61
st minute when a Marist back played
Lenny Cidolit's (Montpellier, France/Montpellier Univ.) cross into the Red Foxes net for an own goal. Neither team would score the rest of the way and the match ended in a draw.
Quotes & Notes
"I thought we hung in there. We went down twice, battled back. We've done that a lot this year and we've done that a lot in the past. I was proud. I think this is the second game in a row that we've outshot a team. Having had a stagnant offense for a good part of the year, we're scoring some goals in the last couple of games. We've got six goals in the last three games. But we can't keep conceding as well." –
Rider Head Coach Charlie Inverso
- Rider leads the all-time series with Marist, 16-12-4. However, Marist had come out on top in each of the last three – two by victory and the third being a tie in the 2021 MAAC Championship Game and Marist advancing on PK's. The Broncs' last win over Marist on Ben Cohen Field came in 2013. Since then, Marist took wins in 2015 and 2019 and the two teams played to a tie in 2017.
