What You Need To Know
- The Rider University men's soccer team wraps up non-conference play Wednesday evening when it plays host to Fordham. The game will be broadcast live on BroncVision.
- The Broncs are 2-3-1 so far this season, with wins over Central Connecticut and Stony Brook, a tie at NJIT and losses to Villanova, Saint Francis (Pa.) and La Salle.
- Last time out, the Broncs earned a convincing 3-1 win over a 4-1 Stony Brook team entering play on Sept. 14.
-
Justin Ruffino scored what proved to be the game-winning goal and added an assist in the win over Stony Brook.
Lenny Cidolit and
Zaki Alibou also scored in the win, while
Adel Al-Masude and
Jeremy Peterson also contributed assists.
- Alibou has scored a team-high four goals this season. While the Broncs have been shut out twice in six games, he's scored a single goal in each of the other four games.
- Seven other Broncs –
Sergio Aguinaga, Al-Masude, Ruffino, Cidolit,
Regis Dulck,
Francisco Gomez Olano and
Guillermo Pavia Vidal – have scored one goal each. Aguinaga, Al-Masude and Ruffino also have added one assist each.
-
Guillaume Sarrabayrouse and Peterson also have one assist for the Broncs.
-
Pablo Gatinois has started four of six games in net this season, posting a 2.20 goals-against average and a .400 saves percentage.
Guillaume Veinante has also played in three games, including two starts, posting a 0.94 GAA and .667 saves percentage.
- The Broncs were picked fourth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll. Rider has qualified for the MAAC Championships in each of the last eight seasons, including four MAAC title game appearances and three MAAC Championships in that span.
- Gomez Olano was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team. He followed up a two-goal, three-assist performance in 17 games in his first season at Rider in 2019 with a three-assist effort in just five games last Spring.
- The Broncs also return graduate student forward
Pablo DeCastro, who's scored 27 goals and registered 61 points over the last four seasons. A two-time All-MAAC Second Team selection, DeCastro scored the game-winning goal in the 2018 MAAC Championship Game at Quinnipiac.
- Gatinois has won 20 games in his four seasons at Rider, compiling 14 clean sheets. His next shutout would tie him for the most in program history with Chip Maruca.
- Rider returned nearly all of its scoring from a year ago, with only
Guillaume Vacter's one goal not returning. Vacter transferred to the University of Connecticut.
- Rider and Fordham have met eight times, with the Broncs taking a 6-2-0 lead in the all-time series. On the scoreboard, Rider has won seven straight. However, the Broncs' win in 1961 was vacated due to use of an ineligible player. Just two meetings have come since the 1961 season, when Rider last hosted the Rams on Sept. 30, 1961. Most recently, the Broncs took a 2-0 win on Sept. 7, 2019, in The Bronx, before taking a 4-3 win on a neutral site at St. John's in the 1996 season.
- After opening the season 0-3-1, with losses to Big East foes Providence, Georgetown and St. John's and a tie against LIU, the Rams have rallied to win two of their last three over Fairleigh Dickinson and La Salle. In the span, they also fell at borough rival Manhattan.
- Fordham has four goals this season – one each from Alberto Pangrazzi, Matt Sloan and Jack Sluys, as well as an own goal. Pangrazzi, Sloan and four others have one assist apiece to tie for the team lead.
- Fordham goalkeepers Nick Buchholz and Callum James have each seen significant time in net for the Rams, with Buchholz posting a 0.67 goals-against average and .750 saves percentage in four games played, including the goalkeeper decisions in each of the last three games. James has a 2.13 GAA and a .654 saves percentage, including a shutout in a scoreless draw with LIU on Sept. 4.
