Men's Golf 13th After First Round at UConn Invitational at GreatHorse

Blandine leads Broncs with three-over 75

HAMPDEN, MA – Sophomore Shawn Blandine (Ringwood, NJ/Don Bosco) shot a three-over 75 to lead the Rider University men's golf team in the first round of the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse Sunday. The Broncs shot 304 as a team and sit tied for 13th of 16 teams following the opening round.

Austin Devereux (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) and Rick van der Nat (Noordwijk, The Netherlands/Visser 't Hooft) are both a stroke back of Blandine at 76 (+4), while Joey Lostombo (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) also carded a 77 (+5). Zander Gibson (Concord, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) also competed, shooting 86 (+14).   

NOTES
- Rhode Island leads the team scoring after the first round at 282 (-6). Army West Point also played its round under par at 286 (-2).
- Army West Point's John Heckel, Jr. is the individual leader after shooting a four-under 68.  
- Rider is one of three MAAC programs competing in the tournament, joining Siena (299) and Iona (302).
- Devereux made up ground on the Par 5's, playing them at two under. Only two players played the Par 5's in fewer strokes.
- van der Nat led the Broncs with 13 par's on the day.
- Blandine made his season debut after playing one round last season as a true freshman for the Broncs.
- Gibson also made his Rider debut.

The Broncs continue play in the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse with tomorrow's second round of three.
