Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker at Iona, 70-69

Marshall posts team-leading fifth double-double of the year

NEW ROCHELLE, NY Tyere Marshall (Philadelphia, PA/Martin Luther King/Putnam Science) posted a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds, but the Rider University men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker at Iona, 70-69, Friday night at the Hynes Center. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 15-11 (9-7 MAAC), while the Gaels improve to 10-13 (8-8 MAAC).

Rider erased an Iona lead of as many as nine points in the first half, tying the game three times in the second half before taking its first lead since the midway point of the first half on a Frederick Scott (Munster, IN/Simeon [DePaul]) three-point play with 3:21 left in the game. Rider pushed the lead to five with pair of Marshall free throws with 37 seconds left. After Iona connected on two free throws on the other end, Rider misfired on three of its next four attempts at the line to leave the door open.

With 12 seconds remaining, Isaiah Ross knocked down a three from the top of the key to give Iona a 70-69 lead. A held ball gave the ball back to Iona with 6.0 seconds left and the Broncs fouled E.J. Crawford with 5.7 seconds remaining. Crawford missed the front end of a 1-and-1, giving Rider another chance with 5.3 seconds left. Jordan went coast-to-coast, got into the lane, but his floater wouldn't fall and Iona came away with the victory.

Quotes & Notes
"We shoot ourselves in the foot. We cost ourselves the game. We've got to make free throws. We've got to execute. We've got to do what we're asking you to do, not what you want to do."

"We wanted to get up and down so they didn't get set up in their zone as much as we could not allow them to do. So we did a decent job doing that." – Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett
