EDISON, NJ - On the strength of championships won by the men's soccer and men's swimming and diving teams, Rider University Athletics ranks first in the MAAC Commissioner's Cup through the winter seasons. The Broncs currently have 99.25 points, ahead of Iona (97.25) and Monmouth (95.50). Rider's women's basketball, volleyball, men's basketball, women's soccer, women's swimming and diving and men's and women's indoor track & field teams also had strong finishes to push the Broncs to the top of the standings.
In the fall, men's and women's soccer, volleyball and field hockey all advanced to the MAAC Championships. The men's soccer team won its third MAAC Championship in four years with an improbable five-game run of shutouts through the final two games of the regular season and three MAAC Championship contests. The Broncs also pushed eventual National Runner-Up Akron, with
Pablo DeCastro equalizing in the 78
th minute and the game remaining tied into the 84
th minute. Volleyball and field hockey each reached the MAAC Semifinals, while women's soccer also advanced to the MAAC Quarterfinals. Â
In the winter, men's swimming and diving won its unprecedented eighth-straight MAAC Championship. Head Coach
Steve Fletcher was named MAAC Coach of the Year for the 10
th time, while Head Diving Coach
Kristen Simms was recognized as the MAAC Diving Coach of the Year.
Dillon Walles was named the MAAC Men's Most Outstanding Diver of the Meet. The team captured 11 gold medals and set three new MAAC Championship records. Both Walles and
Joseph Warker competed at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships in both the 1M and 3M.
In addition, women's basketball finished second in the MAAC and reached the MAAC Semifinals before competing in the WNIT for the second time in the last three years.
Stella Johnson was named MAAC Player of the Year. Women's swimming and diving finished third at MAAC's and set three new MAAC Championship records en route to three gold medals. Men's basketball finished tied for second in the MAAC standings, while men's and women's indoor track and field both finished second at the MAAC Championships. The women's team won five gold medals, while the men took three.
Sara Gardner set a new program record in the 60m hurdles.
Though not included in the MAAC Commissioner's Cup standings as a member of the Eastern Wrestling League this season, Rider's wrestling team also had a strong showing in the winter, finishing second at the EWL Championships and sending four wrestlers to NCAA's. Â
