Men's Basketball Wins Season Opener at Coppin State, 91-84

Three Broncs Score At Least 20 Points

BALTIMORE, MD – Three Rider University men's basketball players scored 20 or more points as the Broncs opened the 2019-20 season with a come-from-behind victory at Coppin State, 91-84. Frederick Scott (Munster, IN/Simeon [DePaul]) and Dimencio Vaughn (New York, NY/Callaway/The Masters School) each had 21 points, with Scott grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds and Vaughn collecting 10. Tyere Marshall (Philadelphia, PA/Martin Luther King/Putnam Science) joined them with 20 points to go along with seven boards as the Broncs shot 65.5 percent (19-29) in the second half.

Coppin State used the three ball to build a double-digit lead in the first half, making 7-of-20 attempts from long range. The Eagles outscored Rider, 21-4, over a four-minute span, culminating in a 23-8 advantage with 12:23 remaining in the period. Rider countered with an 8-0 run, including a four-point play from Scott to whittle the deficit down to seven and later cut it to four as Stevie Jordan (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan/API) scored seven-straight Rider points, Scott converted a lay-up and Vaughn made 1-of-2 free throws at the 6:01 mark. CSU again built its lead to double-digits on three occasions in the opening 20 minutes, before Willy Nuñez, Jr. (Orlando, FL/Oak Ridge [Florida International]) was fouled attempting a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer and made all three from the charity stripe.

Rider made its first four field-goal attempts in the second half and tied the game on a Scott three-pointer at the 12:25 mark. 24 seconds later, Marshall got inside for Rider's first lead since 4-2. After the Eagles retook the lead on a three-pointer, the Broncs took a lead it wouldn't relinquish on a Jordan three-pointer at the 11:30 mark. The lead would swell to as many as 11, 80-69, at the 4:32 mark as Marshall repeatedly got positioning7 inside for lay-ups.

Quotes & Notes
"I thought we did a good job of responding after getting off to a slow start. We may have shown up with not enough energy, but I thought our guys picked it up. Allen Powell gave us some good minutes. We started going inside and were able to get Tyere going. I thought Willy Nuñez in the second half really did some good things, especially coming out of the first half, making those three big free throws at the end, which got us some momentum. In the second half, we were able to slow those guys down from making all the three's they made in the first half."

"I just thought offensively, we needed to move the ball a little bit more. We were one or two passes into a jump shot. Once we started sharing it, once we started going inside, once we started getting guys cutting to the basket, we were able to get some lay-ups and and-ones and free throws. I thought that was the difference in the game." – Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett
