MADISON, NJ – The Rider University men's tennis team swept all three doubles flights, as well as all six singles matches to defeat Drew, 9-0, Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs begin the dual season at 1-0.
Javier Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) and
Ryan Ciaccio (Mercerville, NJ/Hamilton North [Nottingham]) made quick work of Bryce Weizer and Billy McDonald, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles, while
Nicholas Salazar (Miami, FL/Westminster Christian School) and
Brandon Gildea (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) defeated Will Morrison and Karel Raska, 8-3, at No. 3.
Lysander Payano Almonte (New Brunswick, NJ/Colegio Quusquey/Rockland C.C.) and
Peter Komosinski (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Laurel Springs) finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Geoffrey Diehl and Vineet Vemulapally at the top flight.
In singles, Payano Almonte got a quick point at the top flight when his opponent, Diehl, retired with Payano Almonte leading the first set, 4-3. The Broncs won the remaining singles flights in straight sets.
Melendez defeated Vemulapally, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 2, while
Griffin Clark (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) took a 6-1, 6-3, win over Dan Blumenthal at No. 3. Komosinski beat Bryce Kennedy, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4, while Salazar took care of Raska, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5. Ciaccio finished off the victory with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Lloyd Goldstein at No. 6.
