LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Ryan Ciaccio (Mercerville, NJ/Hamilton North [Nottingham]) won his No. 5 singles match and the Broncs took No. 2 doubles, but the Rider University men's tennis team was defeated by Siena, 6-1, Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs slip to 1-2 (0-2 MAAC), while the Saints are now 2-0 (1-0 MAAC).
The two teams split the top two doubles flights, with the Saints' Tomos del Olmo and Guillermo Torres defeating
Lysander Payano Almonte (New Brunswick, NJ/Colegio Quusquey/Rockland C.C.) and
Peter Komosinski (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Laurel Springs), 6-3, at the top flight and
Griffin Clark (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) and
Brandon Gildea (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) getting past Cameron Kirkwood and Matt Bellino, 7-5, at No. 2. The doubles point was decided at No. 3, with the Saints' Sagar Bains and Alex Giannakitsidis taking a 7-6 (3) victory over
Javier Melendez (Cayey, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Merced) and
Nicholas Salazar (Miami, FL/Westminster Christian School).
Ciaccio led 6-4, 3-2, in the second set when his opponent, Kirkwood, retired at No. 5 singles, accounting for the Broncs' lone point. Payano Almonte also played a highly-competitive top singles match against del Olmo, but fell, 6-4, 7-5. The Saints took each of their five singles victories in straight sets.
The Broncs return to action Tuesday, when they play host to Fairfield. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
