BALTIMORE, MD – Coppin State won four of six singles flights to edge the Rider University men's tennis team, 4-3, Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs slip to 2-11, while the Eagles are now 1-7.
“The men fought hard and had chances to pull the win out,” said Rider Head Coach
Doug Potkay. “Our opponents were fast and didn't miss many shots.”
Rider started the match strong, taking the doubles point.
Chris Popso (Florence, NJ/Florence) and
Matthew Begley (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) defeated Zaipo Oula and Andre Sturniolo, 6-1, at No. 1, while
Adam Levi (Princeton Junction, NJ/Pennington School) and
Jeremy Van Herwarde (Sussex, NJ/Pope John XXIII) got past Gavin Lewis and Andrew Diaz, 6-3, at No. 3.
Popso and Van Herwarde won their matches at Nos. 1 and 3 singles easily in straight sets. But the Eagles won the remaining singles flights, including three-set decisions at Nos. 4 and 6 to claim the victory.
The Broncs return to action Wednesday, when they play host to Delaware. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
