PRINCETON, NJ — Men's Tennis earned its second consecutive appearance in the MAAC Championship Final by defeating the Quinnipiac Bobcats 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Roger Martinez and Axel Engstrom started the day on the right foot in doubles, earning a commanding 6-1 victory. However, Cole Thurgur and Matteus Froberg Dahlin were defeated for only the second time in conference play this season, and the tandem of Ibragim Turgambekov and Heath Paul Waters narrowly fell in the tiebreak.
The Broncs immediately responded with several strong performances in singles. Martinez made quick work on court six, earning an impressive 6-1, 6-4 decision. The second match to finish was that of All-MAAC Second Team selection Nathan Slattery, who extended his singles win streak to twelve behind a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Slattery remains unbeaten against conference opponents this season.
With the match score tied at two following a loss on court five, the Broncs turned to their pair of All-MAAC First Team selections to clinch the win. Thurgur, who was named MAAC Player of the Week earlier this week, overpowered his opponent to win 7-5, 7-6 (7-2). All eyes turned to court two, where Froberg Dahlin rebounded from a tightly-contested second-set loss to win 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
With the win, Rider has gone 2-0 against Quinnipiac this season after having lost to the Bobcats in the MAAC Championship Final last season. The Broncs will play the undefeated Marist Red Foxes in the championship tomorrow afternoon. Last Friday, the Broncs were narrowly defeated 4-3 by Marist in Poughkeepsie.
