LUTHERVILLE, MD – Loyola took all three doubles flights and all six singles matches to defeat the Rider University men's tennis team, 7-0, Monday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs slip to 2-15, while the Greyhounds are now 7-10.
The Broncs were competitive in doubles, pushing the Greyhounds in all three flights.
Adam Levi (Princeton Junction, NJ/Pennington School) and
Chris Popso (Florence, NJ/Florence) gave Blest Jones and Brett Shriver all they could handle at No. 1 before falling, 7-5.
Jeremy Van Herwarde (Sussex, NJ/Pope John XXIII) and
Matthew Begley (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) also showed well in a 6-4 loss to Brian Hoffarth and Kyle Gower at No. 3.
“Men's doubles had chances to get the doubles point,” said Rider Head Coach
Doug Potkay. “First doubles were up 5-0.”
In singles, Popso was very competitive in the first set of a 7-5, 6-1, loss to Reid Burch at No. 3, while
Griffin Clark (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) lost a hard-fought battle to Matt Fitzmaurice, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6. All of the Greyhounds' six singles victories came in straight sets.
The Broncs return to action Wednesday, when they travel to Monmouth. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
