LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Rider University wrestling team (6-1, 2-1 EWL) suffered its first dual meet loss of the season by a 22-10 score to the Edinboro Fighting Scots Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
“We had our chances here tonight” said Coach Taylor about the loss. “There is no excuse. They beat us.”
The Broncs received victories from junior 157
B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), junior 165
Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), and senior 197
Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy).
The match began at 149 pounds, where 11th ranked Patricio Lugo of Edinboro defeated
Jesse Rodgers (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) by a 3-1 score to put the Fighting Scots ahead 3-0.
The Broncs would take the next two matches, beginning with 16th ranked Clagon defeating Chase Delande 7-3.
Seventh ranked
Chad Walsh would then step into a clash of ranked foes and familiar rivals, facing off against 14th ranked Austin Matthews, who had defeated Walsh by a 17-6 score in the 2016 Eastern Wrestling League finals.
Walsh would fall behind 4-1 early before scoring seven consecutive points to take home the 8-4 victory. “It was definitely a better match tonight. Last year, he pulled away from me so it was hard to come back on him. Tonight, I stayed in the match through the first period and was able to pull away from him after that,” said Walsh.
The Broncs would then suffer losses at 174 and 184, with
Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) losing to Ty Schoffstall 12-8, and
Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) losing to Dakota Geer, who is ranked 18th nationally, 7-2.
The Broncs would then take home a victory by technical fall at 197, with Wolfe ending the match 15-0 at 2:27, pushing the score to 11-9.
Mauro Correnti (Delran, NJ/Holy Cross) would suffer a 4-1 loss in the second tiebreaker to 11th ranked Billy Miller at heavyweight.
The match would continue down at 125, where
J.R. Wert (Christiansburg, VA/Christiansburg) would suffer a 7-2 loss to ninth ranked Sean Russell. At 133 pounds with the score 15-11, Korbin Myers would defeat Sophomore
Anthony Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park Regional) by a 4-3 score with riding time proving to be the factor after the second tiebreaker to put the match out of reach, 18-11.
The Broncs would lose a team point during the 141 pound match-up between
Evan Fidelibus (Easton, PA/Easton Area) and Nate Hagan of Edinboro for a Control of Mat violation by the Rider bench. Fidelibus would suffer a 9-1 loss to close the dual, 22-10.
The Broncs next match is on Sunday January 22nd, when they play host to Cleveland State in Alumni Gymnasium.
