Men's College Tennis
Sacred Heart University 6, Rider University 0
LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University men's tennis team lost to Sacred Heart University on Thursday afternoon.
For Rider, sophomore Diego Delgado (Lara, Venezuela/Colegio Rioclaro) led his second singles match 7-6 (6) and 1-0 in the second set but the match went unfinished when Sacred Heart clinched the match.
“Diego played a long first set,” said head coach Doug Potkay. “He did a nice job coming back to win the tiebreaker.”
In doubles play, freshman Ryan Ciaccio (Mercerville/Hamilton North (Nottingham)) and sophomore Jeremy Van Herwarde (Sussex/Pope John XXIII) were leading their third doubles match 5-4 when the Pioneers clinched the team doubles points by winning first and second doubles, causing that match to also go unfinished.
The match was Code Cranberry where Rider's other varsity teams come out and support each other's teams in a show of solidarity that while the Broncs have 20 sports, we are all one team that is Rider University.
“It was great seeing the bleachers packed to show support for the tennis program,” Potkay said. “Their spirit and enthusiasm was appreciated.”
The Rider men host Marist College on Saturday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at 11am, the final match of the 2015-16 season.
“Overall we played well,” Potkay added. “We are looking forward to the match on Saturday.”
