Men 1st, Women 2nd at Rider Invitational

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Rider men placed first of 15 teams and the Rider women were second of 14 teams at the Rider Invitational Sunday. Saint Joseph's University placed first among the women.

“The men had a lot of really good performances today,” said Rider head coach Bob Hamer.

For the Rider men, sophomore Christin Patrick (East Orange/Seton Hall Prep.) won the 110m hurdles (15.19) and won the high jump (6'6.25”). “Chris had a great day,” Hamer said. “He was our double winner on the day. He won the high jump that is very close to his PR.”

Sophomore Shabazz Shuler (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) won the long jump (22'11”) and in his first attempt at throwing the javelin placed fourth (163'5”). “Shabazz had a great day,” Hamer said. “We tried him in the javelin throw and he had a really good throw. We think he can help us in the MAAC Championship in that event.”

Junior Kyle Bryant (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) also got a taste of the javelin throw (156'2.75”) after winning the triple jump (47'1”) and placing fourth in the long jump (22'1.75”). “Bryant had a good meet and he has a good arm so we put him in the jav as well.” Hamer said.

Freshman Marcell Brown (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) won the shot put (50'9.5”). “He has the talent and today he just went out there and competed and did a really great job,” Hamer said.

For the Rider women, senior Daria Chadwick (Summit, NJ) won the 100m hurdles (15.01) and placed second in the high jump (5'5.25”) and freshman Ashley Berry (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) won the discus (137'5.5”) and placed second in the shot put (42'4.75”). “Daria continues to turn in consistently good performances,” Hamer said.

Senior Olivia Rosenberger (North Wales, PA/Gwynedd Mercy) won the triple jump (37'5”) and sophomore Karoline Sandvig (West Windsor, NJ/WW Plainsboro South) was the top collegiate finisher in the hammer with a personal record distance of 152'2.75”). “Karoline led us off with a big PR,” Hamer said. “Olivia bounced back this weekend from an ankle problem. That was nice to see her do well today.”

Also for the Rider men junior Erik Adamcik (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) won the pole vault (14'11”), sophomore Danniel Belay (Gaithersburg, MD) was second in the 3,000m steeplechase (9:47.39), sophomore Joe Clarke (Stockton, NJ/Delaware Valley) was second in the javelin (184'75”), junior Devon Jefferson (Franklin Park, NJ/Franklin) was second in the 110m hurdles (15.40) and senior Charles Wilkes (Secane, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) was second in the shot put (48'4”).

Also for the Rider women, the 4 x 800 relay team of freshman Angela Cotugno (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville), senior Madeline Hummel (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross), junior Juliann Brand (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and sophomore Victoria Brewer (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) won in a time of 9:47.97.

Senior Nicole Georgia (Lincoln Park, NJ/Boonton) placed second in the 400m hurdles (1:04.46) and third in the 100m hurdles (15.25).

Sophomore Dakota Karras (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) placed second in the triple jump (35'2.5”).

Last season the men won the Rider Invitational and the women were fourth of 22 teams. In 2014 both the Rider men and women placed first of 19 teams. In 2013 the men and women placed first of 14 teams. The men also placed first in 2011 and 2010. The women finished first in 2009. The women also won the first Rider Invitational in 2005.

“It started out as a two or three team meet and now we have 15 to 17 teams consistently come and it's great,” Hamer said. “We have a great facilities staff and (Assistant AD) Brian Keane and his staff do a great job running a top-notch invitational here. We have a great facility here at Rider and in addition to the MAAC Championships it gives the Rider community a chance to come see us compete.”

Rider travels to Upstate Pennsylvania next weekend to compete at Moravian's Greyhound Invitational on Friday and at Bucknell's Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday.
