Box Score Women's College Soccer
Rider University 1, Manhattan College 1 (2 OT)
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Rider University women's soccer team tied Manhattan College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Wednesday. “I thought we played well,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. “I thought we controlled most of the game. It was a good performance, one of the better games we played, but as always if you play well it doesn't always mean you get the win.”
Rider senior Caroline Healy (Dublin, Ireland/Alexandra College) scored to give Rider a 1-0 lead on assists from sophomore Maddie Lipton (Los Angeles, Calif. /El Camino Real Charter) and sophomore Kourtney Cunningham (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall). “We scored a good goal to get ahead,” Hounsome said, “but we couldn't get that second goal.”
Manhattan (5-8-1, 3-3-1 MAAC) scored in the 54th minute to tie the score at 1-1. “They scored a really good goal to tie it,” Hounsome said.
Cunningham had five of Rider's 19 shots. “Kourtney hit a post and a crossbar,” Hounsome said.
Rider out-shot Manhattan 19-12, including 3-1 in overtime. “We controlled most of the tempo,” Hounsome said. “Our defenders played really well.”
Rider senior Bethany-May Howard (Glastonbury, England/Bridgwater College) made two saves.
It was Rider's fifth overtime of the season. The Broncs are now 1-1-3 in overtime. “Obviously disappointed not to get three points (for a win) but I think 16 points (5 wins, 1 tie) should be good enough to get us in the playoffs. It has been in previous years. And we still have three games left to play.”
Rider (8-3-3, 5-1-1 MAAC) is off to its best start ever in MAAC play. The Broncs are now 7-1-3 in their last 11 games,
Manhattan was coming off of a 2-1 come-from-behind win at Saint Peter's on Saturday. That victory snapped a two-game losing streak.
Rider and Manhattan tied 0-0 last year.
The last time Manhattan defeated Rider was in the 2015 MAAC playoffs. “Getting a point tonight is good,” Hounsome said. “They beat us last year in the semifinals so this was a good rebound.”
Rider leads the all-time series with the Jaspers 8-6-5.
Rider hosts Marist Saturday afternoon. “Marist is a team we traditionally don't do well against,” Hounsome said, “so it is going to be tough, but we will be looking to enjoy our Senior Day with a win.”
