Morgan’s Sneaky Set Piece Offset by Second Half Highlanders Goal in Newark

NEWARK, NJ – The Rider University women's soccer team ended their trip to Newark on Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 tie. With the draw, the Broncs improve to a record of 1-0-1 while ending their non-conference road trip.

Ashley Moore continued her solid start to the season in goal, preventing NJIT from scoring early from a corner in the 17th minute. Tess Ferrie sent in a tester early, having her shot on goal saved by the Highlander goalkeeper in the 31st minute.

But the deadlock was broken as defender Bethie Morgan sent in a shot from the free kick, fooling the opposition at the near post for the Bronc's second goal on the young season in the 37th minute of the match. Morgan also capitalized from the free possession, scoring the first goal from a set piece for the Broncs in 2026.

NJIT went into the halftime break with a 9-3 shot ratio, but Moore and the Bronc's defense remained solid, as the sophomore goalkeeper completed five saves in the first half alone.

The Highlander's struck early in the second half, scoring in the 58th minute to deny the shutout. The goal from NJIT ended the Bronc's shutout streak of 296 days, dating back to their 1-0 win against Marist on October 29, 2025.

Besides a shot on target by NJIT in the 79th minute, which was promptly saved by Moore, both team's rounded out the 1-1 tie, with the Bronc's nearly snatching the winner in the final minute of the game on a cross into the box, with no one on the other end of the ball.

Quotes and Notes

"The short turnaround from Thursday was a challenge and playing a team with more recovery time is a challenge. We had to adopt a different formation which is a challenge, so it was a big challenge today and the team stepped up to it. Overall the result is even but the nature of our opportunities means the team is disappointed for not winning. There is lots of learning moments that we will take from the video and work on this week in training." – head coach Drayson Hounsome.
