Rider at Va. Duals Day One
Rider 17, Grand Canyon 16 (3rd criteria)
Chattanooga 24, Rider 13
Old Dominion 26, Rider 14
HAMPTON, VIRGINIA—The shorthanded Broncs won one of three matches at the 2016 Virginia Duals Friday. “It was a rough day, competing without having our full team,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “There were some bright spots individually.”
All-American BJ Clagon, ranked 14th in the nation, was not 100 percent healthy and did not compete, while Chad Walsh, ranked ninth, has been ill all week but still tried to compete in the first match of the day. “We let Chad try it, he really wanted to go, but he didn't have his strength,” Taylor said. “BJ just wasn't ready.”
During the second match Conor Brennan, ranked ninth in the nation, was injured. “You take those three guys out against a team like Old Dominion and we're not going to win. Give the upper weights credit for winning four in a row.”
For the Broncs (4-6) freshman Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) won three times Friday, twice by major decision. “He looked really good,” Taylor said of his red-shirt freshman.
Senior Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) was 2-0 before being injured in the second match of the day, against Chattanooga. “Conor looked good, coming back (vs. Chattanooga) after he got injured,” Taylor said. “He had to get through the rest of that match.”
Senior Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional), sophomore Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional), junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) and sophomore Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) each won twice on Friday. “Stinson did a good job in the last match (ODU),” Taylor said. “Deutsch looked good in the first match. It is very good to get him back.”
Against Grand Canyon, the Broncs won on the third criteria, total points (76-70) after each team won four decisions and a major.
Fagg-Daves won that major decision to tie the match at 13-13, and Wolfe won to give Rider the 16-13 lead. “Wolfe did a good job today,” Taylor said. Rider junior Paul Kirchner (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) also won in the first match of the day.
Against Chattanooga, Deutsch had a major decision and Wolfe lost to the 19th ranked wrestler in the nation.
Against ODU sophomore Mauro Correnti (Delran, N.J./Holy Cross) won a major decision.
Rider wrestles again Saturday against Bucknell. “We'll try to get out of here somehow tomorrow and try to heal up for next week,” Taylor said.
