PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Both the Rider University men's and women's tennis teams lost a non-conference match at Temple University on Saturday.

For the Rider men, the doubles team of sophomore Jeremy Van Herwarde (Sussex/Pope John XXIII) and freshman Brandon Gildea (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) won 8-7 (6) in the tiebreaker.

“The men's doubles teams are starting to gel,” said head coach Doug Potkay. “Jeremy and Brandon battled to win their first doubles match of the season.”

In the first singles match, sophomore Diego Delgado (Lara, Venezuela/Colegio Rioclaro) won four games before losing 6-1, 6-3.

For the Bronc women, freshman Vanessa Canda (Jersey City/McNair Academic HS), sophomore Danielle Scrudato (Califon/Voorhees), freshman Caitlin Gardner (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) and sophomore Kelli Swanson (Wenonah/GCIT) each won two games in their respective singles matches.

“The women's team came up against a very experienced Temple team,” Potkay said. “The players tried to exploit the weaknesses of their opponents but the Owls were just too strong.”

The first doubles team of Canda and Gardner won three games before losing 8-3.

The men's tennis team hosts Fordham University on Sunday at 1:30pm.
