AMBLER, PA—Different cultures celebrate birthdays in different ways, often with a gift, a party or a rite of passage. Nineteenth birthdays are often overshadowed by the milestone 18th and 21st. But the 19th is special because it is the last birthday as a teenager.
Rider sophomore Emily Schmitt (Bellmore, N.Y. /W.C. Mepham) celebrated her last birthday as a teenager by scoring her first career goal, but it was not enough for the Broncs (1-2).
The Broncs lost at Temple Tuesday afternoon. “They are good,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome, “but we did okay against them.”
Schmitt scored to tie the score at 1-1 with 26 minutes left in the second half. “She took a free kick from about 25 yards out and nobody got on the end of it,” Hounsome said. “It is something we've been working on so even if nobody gets on it, it should still get into the back of the goal.”
Temple (4-0) scored with five minutes left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead and scored with 13 minutes left in the game for a 2-1 lead.
“We scored two goals but they decided not to give us one,” Hounsome said. “The linesman said it was offside, even though it clearly wasn't. That was disappointing. That was before Emily's so Emily's goal would have given us a 2-1 lead, which changes the dynamics.”
Temple out-shot Rider 24-4, including 9-2 in shots on goal.
Rider junior goalkeeper Bethany-May Howard (Glastonbury, England/Bridgwater College) made seven saves. “Beth played well,” Hounsome said. “We gave up way too many shots.”
Temple began the season by outscoring its first three opponents 12-0.
The Broncs lost 3-0 to Temple last season. Rider and Temple have now met five times since the series began in 2004 with the Broncs holding a 3-2 lead in the series.
“It was an improved performance over Thursday (2-1 loss at FDU),” Hounsome said.
The Broncs travel to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph's Sunday afternoon at 1pm.
