Several Broncs competed at the Penn Relays on Saturday. “The final day of Penn Relays was very good,” said Rider head coach Bob Hamer, “and hopefully we can carry this momentum into the MAAC Championships next weekend. We are looking forward to a great meet next weekend.”

The women's 4x800 relay team of junior Madeline Hummel (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross), junior Stephanie Welte (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Basil's Academy), senior Emily Ritter (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Tech) and freshman Victoria Brewer (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) finished in an ECAC qualifying time of 9:03.62, the second fastest time ever in program history, finishing 14th of 24.

“The 4 x 800 ran great,” Hamer said.  “Maddie ran a great leadoff leg to put us in it.  She has been running very well the last few weeks and she did her job today. Steph ran a very nice second leg to run her fastest 800 split ever. Her role was to keep us close and give Emily a chance to get us near the front.  Emily ran a great leg to get us near the leader. We put her on that leg to do exactly that and she did a great job.  She's our best leg and we needed her to put us back in it. Tori ran a decent leg, she just needed to be a bit better over the last 300 meters and we had a shot at breaking 9:00. It was our best effort of the Penn Relays this weekend.”

The men's 4x800 relay team of freshman Anfernee Joseph (Somerset, NJ/Franklin), junior Darien Edwards (South Orange, NJ/St. Benedict's), junior Tom McLaughlin (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor) and sophomore Scott Wood (Florence, N.J./ Holy Cross) finished in an IC4A qualifying time of 7:39.66, finishing 10th of 23. “The men ran a very competitive race,” Hamer said.  “Anfernee did a real nice job of putting us in it. Darien ran a very nice leg to put us in the middle of the pack. He's been coming along lately and it was nice to see him have a great result. Tom ran a good third leg. He settled a bit on the third 200 but got it back together for the last 200 to finish strong. Scott had a tough day but he ran hard. It was a real good race for this group.”

Senior Andrew Pozo (Forked River, N.J./Toms River HS South) placed 29th (of 33) in the hammer with a toss of 52.66.

Rider will now compete at the MAAC Championships, hosted by Monmouth University May 2-3.
