Rider at Penn Relays-Day Two
PHILADLEPHIA, PA—Members of the Rider University track & field team are competing at the 121st edition of the Penn Relay Carnival at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
On Thursday the Rider women discovered how tough a meet this could be. On Friday, the men learned as well.
The highlight of the day for the Broncs was senior George Solujich (East Windsor, NJ/Notre Dame) in the shot put, who had a toss of 16.49 meters.
“George had a solid day,” said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. “He was close to hitting a few big throws. He's real close to getting to that next level.”
Rider's two high jumpers failed to qualify for the finals, the distance medley relay had a bad day, and the shuttle hurdle relay team came up with an injury.
“Outside of George we were not very good today,” Hamer said. “This is a tough environment but we still have higher expectations. We need to have a good day tomorrow and regroup and get ready for MAACs.”
The majority of the Rider team will be competing at the Lion invitational Saturday, hosted by the College of New Jersey.
Several other Broncs will be at the Penn Relays on Saturday, including senior Andrew Pozo (Forked River, N.J./Toms River HS South) in the hammer, the women's 4x800 relay team of junior Madeline Hummel (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross), junior Stephanie Welte (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Basil's Academy), senior Emily Ritter (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Tech) and freshman Victoria Brewer (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem), and the men's 4x800 relay team of freshman Anfernee Joseph (Somerset, NJ/Franklin), junior Darien Edwards (South Orange, NJ/St. Benedict's), junior Tom McLaughlin (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor) and sophomore Scott Wood (Florence, N.J./ Holy Cross)
Rider will compete at the MAAC Championships, hosted by Monmouth University April 2-3.
