Rider at Penn Relays-Day One

PHILADLEPHIA, PA—Several Broncs are competing in the 121st edition of the Penn Relay Carnival at Franklin Field Thursday through Saturday on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

“We had an okay day,” said Rider head coach Bob Hamer.  “We were not great in anything but not terrible.”

On Thursday in the high jump, both junior Daria Chadwick (Summit, NJ) and senior Taylor Harmon (Robbinsville, NJ) each cleared 5'3”.

“Daria and Taylor cleared early heights and then had some good attempts at the next height,” Hamer said. “The weather definitely affected the event today.”

Freshman Stephanie Lombardo (Buffalo, N.Y./Cheektowaga) placed 36th of 50 in the shot put with a distance of 40'11”.

“Steph was decent technically today,” Hamer said. “She just didn't have that big throw. It is in there and it will come in her next opportunity.”

The 4 x 100 relay team of junior Miranda Roberts (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), freshman Cleopatra Morrison (Long Branch, NJ), junior Daria Chadwick (Summit, NJ) and junior Nicole Georgia (Lincoln Park, NJ/Boonton) finished 65th of 98 in 49.60. “We had a bad handoff that hurt the overall time,” Hamer said. “If we get it together for next week (MAAC Championships) we can have a great result.”

The distance medley relay team of junior Stephanie Welte (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Basil's Academy), senior Ashley Edwards (Westfield), junior Madeline Hummel (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross) and senior Emily Ritter (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Tech) placed 15th (of 20) in 11:58.41.

“The DMR was a solid effort,” Hamer said.  “Steph had a nice leadoff leg to get us in the race. Ashley ran a real good 400 leg. She has many great 400 legs on the DMR and today was no exception. She was our best leg today. Maddie ran very well but she struggled over the last 80 meters. She has been getting better each week and it was a good race for her. Emily had an off day and in the DMR if you have an off day in the mile you will not have a great result.”

On Friday Rider will compete in the men's pole vault, high jump, shot put, DMR and shuttle hurdle relay.  “Hopefully we will have a better day tomorrow with the men,” Hamer said.
