LAWRENCEVILLE—Led by a wins at first singles and first doubles from freshman Chris Popso (Florence), the Rider University men's tennis team snapped a 12-match losing streak and defeated Siena College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match Sunday morning.
“This was a great effort and a great team win,” said head coach Doug Potkay before he hurried off to travel to Monmouth this afternoon. “It's great to get a win, especially in conference play.”
Rider traveled to Monmouth University late Sunday afternoon and lost 6-0 in the final match of the season.
Against Siena, Popso won 6-2, 7-5 in his singles match, his fourth win of the season and he teamed up with sophomore Ahmed Al-Shawafi (Pennington/Hopewell Valley Central) for an 8-6 win at first doubles.
“Chris and Ahmed finally gelled as a doubles team and got their first win,” Potkay added.
Also for the Broncs against the Saints, freshman Jeremy Van Herwarde (Sussex/Pope John XXIII) won 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles, his fourth win of the season with freshman Agaazi Berhane (Williamstown) scoring a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory at sixth singles, his fifth win of the year.
Van Herwarde and Agaazi teamed up for an 8-5 win at third doubles.
Against Monmouth, Van Herwarde won two games at second singles before losing 6-0, 6-2.
"Playing the second match of the day, we played well but Monmouth was just too strong," Potkay said.
