Army 7, Rider University 0
WEST POINT, N.Y.—The Rider University men's tennis team took to the indoor courts at Army on Sunday, losing the spring season opener against the Black Knights.
“We were a bit rusty,” said Bronc head coach Doug Potkay. “This was our first match of the season and Army was playing their seventh so they played with a bit more confidence than we did.”
Sophomore Ahmed Al-Shawafi (Pennington/Hopewell Valley) won five games at fourth singles before losing 6-2, 6-3, freshman Jeremy Van Herwarde (Sussex/Pope John XXIII) lost 6-2, 6-1 at third singles and sophomore Chanton Phan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) took two games in the second set at second singles before losing 6-0, 6-2.
Phan and Van Herwarde teamed up at first doubles and lost 8-4.
“Jeremy (Van Herwarde), Ahmed (Al-Shawafi) and Chanton (Phan) all played well,” Potkay added. “Their matches were hard fought.”
The Bronc women are scheduled to open their spring season on March 1 at Lehigh. The Rider men play again at Lafayette on March 7.
